As passed from Martha Emma Thomas to Jane Hudson Thomas to Martha Thomas Walworth to Pelham Thomas, jr.

3 1/2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
Cut in 1/2 cup Crisco.
Push back, leaving hole in center.
Dissolve 1/4 tsp soda and 2 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt in 3/4 cup buttermilk.
Beat two small eggs or one large, mix.
Pour all these ingredients in hole.
Add 2 tsp vanilla extract.
Mix, gradually adding flour-sugar-Crisco mixture.
Handle as biscuits: turn onto well-floured board, roll out 1/4 inches thick.
Sprinkle with sugar, and roll sugar in lightly so it will stick.
Cook at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
