James Egerton: b. 1904, d. 1996
James Pinkney Egerton (1904–1996) was a native of Polk County, NC. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Mill Spring, NC and a former singer in the Christian Harmony of Singing Groups. Attended Mars Hill College and managed Egerton and Sons and a general merchandise store, until it closed. He was a mail carrier serving Routes #1 and #2 of the Mill Spring, NC Post Office. Treasurer of the Mill Spring FIre Department and formerly a member of The Meeting Place and The Polk County Historical Society.
His wife Sarah: "If he heard of a Christian Harmony singing, we were packed and out the door."
"Not Made With Hands" was his song. "On the last refrain he would ho-o-o-o-o-old on "hands", a major rubato, then finish back a tempo. Further on, he would walk in on two canes, and would hold up his right cane for that rubato. At the end when he was in a wheelchair, he'd still hold it out, even longer maybe...."
(From his obituary, plus a contribution from Dan Huger.)
